However, she eventually became disenchanted with the business world. Since she had made some wise investments, she was able to quit her job and move West while she decided what career really would make her happy. Winding up in Colorado to do some skiing, she started playing $5-limit poker and learned the basics of the game as a frequent player. She was hired as a prop by the casinos to attract other players to the tables and worked on improving her game by reading books written by top poker players.

Kathy’s next stop was Las Vegas where she played in her first tournament and finished in second place in Omaha Hi/Lo. Her next game a week later was her first Texas Hold’em tournament where she again took second place. Her winnings after only one week of playing tournament poker were $34,000.

Kathy Liebert has the distinction of being the first female tournament poker millionaire and is third on the list of top women money winners. She has also earned more money in open field tournaments than any other woman in the history of poker and has been ranked four times over the years in Card Player’s Magazines’ Top Twenty Players: 4th, 9th, 12th and 18th. Some of her most recent wins are as follows:

• Oct. 2005 – World Speed Poker Open, London – 3rd Place – Amount of prize money not available
• Oct. 2005 – $10,000 Annual Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship – Bellagio Festa Al Lago IV, Las Vegas – 13th Place – $34,385
• Sept. 2005 – $9,700 Championship Event – No Limit Hold’em 2005 WSOP Tournament Circuit – Grand Casino Tunica, Robinsonville – 12th Place – $24,310
• July 2005 – $3,000 No Limit Hold’em Ultimate Poker Challenge, Las Vegas – 2nd Place – $24,955
• June 2005 – $1,000 Ladies Only Event – No Limit Hold’em 36th WSOP 2005, Las Vegas – 52nd Place – $1,365
• June 2005 – $1,500 Limit Hold’em Shootout 36th WSOP 2005, Las Vegas – 7th Place – $24,840

Kathy is different from most other professional poker players in that she maintains emotional stability. Regardless of winning or losing, her behavior is exemplary and she does not act up at the tables but is always calm and professional.

Kathy comments that she sees the Internet as a factor in poker play because many people get their experience online before they actually play at the tables. She says that they have the opportunity to see hands played out by highly-experienced poker pros which gives the new players a level of skill that would not have been possible for newcomers back when she started playing.
