Jamie Day struck the first goal after 10 minutes, Richard Butcher scored the second on 32 while new signing Simon Yeo scored a third on 10 minutes before half time. Sammy Igoe reduced the deficit seven minutes after the interval but Lloyd Opara struck a fourth for the 11/10 Posh on 77.

Conference champions Accrington Stanley received a dose of reality as they lost 2-0 at Chester City. Drewe Broughton netted the first after15 minutes and Gregg Blundell scored a penalty on 86 for the 6/5 Blues.

Newly promoted Hereford United won their first match of the season, beating Stockport County at Edgeley Park. Former Cardiff City striker Stuart Fleetwood netted for the 2/1 Bulls four minutes before the interval and Tamika Mkandawire made sure with a second goal on 59.

Boston United found themselves 2-0 up at Grimsby Town, but still lost the match 3-2. Francis Green gave the Pilgrims the lead on 16 and Julian Joachim added a second after 54 minutes. Grimsby won it thanks to a double from Peter Bore after 68 and 79 minutes while Isaiah Rankin scored one in between on 73 to earn a 9/10 home win.

Martin Allen enjoyed a successful first match in charge of the MK Dons as they beat Bury 2-1. Izale McLeod converted a penalty on the hour while Bury’s Andy Bishop responded in a similar manner on 81. The in demand McLeod scored his second of the match two minutes later to seal victory at odds of 4/6.

Swindon Town beat Hartlepool United at Victoria Park to get the better of two relegated sides. Lee Peacock netted the only goal of the game after 11 minutes for the 21/10 Robins.

Lee Thorpe struck five minutes into stoppage time to earn an opening day victory for Torquay United at Barnet. A goalless draw seemed likely until a costly mistake from veteran Paul Warhurst’s saw the 21/10 Seagulls begin their campaign on a positive note.

Walsall beat Rochdale 1-0 after Martin Butler scored the crucial goal for the 8/5 Saddlers three minutes into the second half.

Shrewsbury Town earned a draw against Mansfield Town to mark their final season at Gay Meadow. Debutante Matthew Hamshaw gave Mansfield the lead after 17 minutes but Shrewsbury equalised five minutes later through Stuart Drummond. The home side took the lead thanks to a Dave Edwards goal after 31 minutes but the Stags sealed a 23/10 draw when Simon Brown equalised on 43.

Lincoln City and Notts County played out a 1-1 draw at Sincil Bank. Adie Moses put the Imps in front after 10 minutes, but the Magpies snatched a 12/5 draw when Jeff Hughes scored an own goal after 55 minutes.

Wrexham returned to Wales with after earning a draw at Wycombe Wanderers. Tommy Mooney gave the Chairboys a sixth minute lead but Jones pleased the 9/4 draw backers on 32.
