Despite the loss of key players Steve Howard and Kevin Nicholls, Luton Town got off to a winning start against Leicester City. Leon Barnett broke the deadlock with his first senior goal after eight minutes and Carlos Edwards made sure of the win with a goal on 79 for the 6/4 Hatters.

Relegated West Bromwich Albion got off to a winning start after beating Hull City 2-0 at the Hawthorns. Former Arsenal and Celtic striker John Hartson scored two goals on his debut on 57 and 90 to ensure victory at odds of 6/10.

Birmingham City also adapted to life in the second tier, beating newcomers Colchester United at St Andrews. DJ Campbell scored his first goal for the club after half an hour but Richard Garcia equalised on 51. It was left to fellow substitute Niklas Bendtner, on loan from Arsenal, to score the winning goal 11 minutes from the end for the 9/20 Blues.

Cardiff City beat promoted Barnsley 2-1 at Oakwell, their first opening day win for four years. Joe Ledley and Steven Thompson struck two quick goals on 19 and 22 minutes for the 7/4 Bluebirds before Brian Howard reduced the deficit on 31.

Peter Taylor saw his Crystal Palace side come from behind to defeat Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Nick Forster gave Jim Magilton a perfect start with a goal on 30 but Watford target Jobi McAnuff equalised after 58 minutes. James Scowcroft returned to haunt his old club and ensured an away win at 17/10 odds after 61 minutes.

Even money shots Leeds United produced a slender victory against Norwich City. Birthday boy David Healy converted the decisive penalty four minutes before the break.

League Two champions Southend United enjoyed a perfect start to life in the Championship by beating Stoke City 1-0. Fredy Eastwood chalked up goal number 50 for the 13/10 Shrimpers when he struck home a penalty after 14 minutes.

On Sunday, Coventry City denied Sunderland manager Niall Quinn a debut victory as they came from behind to win at the Ricoh Arena. Daryl Murphy put the visiting Black Cats in front after 52 minutes but Trinidad & Tobago international Stern John restored parity on 71. Gary McSheffrey struck the winner for the 6/4 Sky Blues seven minutes later.

Super sub Paul Peschisolido fired in a last minute goal to earn Derby County a 2-2 draw against Southampton. The home side took the lead through Seth Johnson 10 minutes before the interval but Gareth Bale levelled for the Saints after 62 minutes. Debutante Bradley Wright-Phillips put the visitors ahead on 68 until Peschisolido snatched a 9/4 draw at the death.
